Hormones & Steroids
Hormones are important chemicals released by cells that can affect cells in other parts of the organism. Only a relatively minor amount of hormone is required to affect cellular metabolism. Hormones are essentially chemical messengers which transports signals between cells. Steroids are synthetic hormones which mimic or exceed the effects of naturally produced hormones in the body. Steroids are typically prescribed to help control inflammation as well as conditions such as asthma and lupus. Anabolic steroids are used to increase muscle growth or cardiovascular performance.
All multicellular organisms produce hormones. Hormones in animals are generally transported in the blood and are delivered to cell surface receptors which bind the hormone triggering a signal cascade within the target cell. The binding of the hormone to this receptor protein and the subsequent activation of this signal transduction mechanism ultimately leads to cell type-specific responses.
Endocrine hormones are secreted directly into the bloodstream, while exocrine hormones are secreted directly into a duct, and from the duct they either make their way to the bloodstream or else pass from cell to cell in a process called paracrine signalling. Measurement of hormone levels is an important tool for researchers and medical practitioners as hormone levels exert a major level of control over factors such as growth and development, metabolism, sexual function, reproduction, and mood/mental health.
Fitzgerald Industries offers a wide range of hormone antibodies in monoclonal and polyclonal formats and ideally suited for use in existing assays or for the development of new test procedures. Our high quality hormone antibodies are highly specific for their target antigens and are rated for use in a wide variety of immunoassays including ELISA, Immunohistochemistry, Western blot, Immunocytochemistry, Immunofluorescence, Flow Cytometry and many more.
We also list a large range of hormone and steroid antibody pairs which can also be viewed in our antibody matched pair brochure.
Some of our most popular hormone antibodies include:
hCG beta antibody: Human chorionic gonadotropin allows the corpus luteum to secrete the hormone progesterone during the first trimester. Progesterone enriches the uterus with a thick lining of blood vessels and capillaries so that it can sustain the growing fetus. The beta-subunit may also protect the fetus from disease infection. This monoclonal hCG beta antibody is specific for Human hCG beta.
Validated hCG Antibody Pairs:
FSH antibody: Follicle-stimulating hormone is produced by the pituitary gland. FSHoperates in conjunction with luteinizing hormone (LH) to stimulate development of the graafian follicle, a small, egg-containing vesicle in the ovaries. In males, it promotes the development of the tubules of the testes and the differentiation of sperm. This FSH antibody is perfect for use in ELISA assays.
Validated FSH Antibody Pairs:
| Capture Antibody | Detection Antibody |
|---|---|
| FSH mAb 10-F15D | FSH beta mAb 10-F25A |
| FSH mAb 10-F25A | FSH beta mAb 10-F25C |
| FSH mAb 10-7978 | FSH mAb 10-7979 |
Insulin antibody: Insulin regulates the levels of sugar in the blood, when the level of blood glucose falls, secretion of insulin stops, and the liver releases glucose into the blood. This monoclonal insulin antibody is one of our most popular hormone antibodies and is recommended for use in ELISA.
Insulin+Proinsulin antibody: Insulin is a vital hormone which regulates carbohydrate and fat metabolism in the body. Proinsulin is the prohormone precursor to insulin made in the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans. This monoclonal Insulin+Proinsulin antibody is rated for use in ELISA and IHC.
Validated Insulin and Proinsulin Antibody Pairs:
| Antibody Pair | Capture Antibody | Detection Antibody |
|---|---|---|
| Insulin Antibody Pair | Insulin mAb 10-I30B | Insulin mAb 10-I30C |
| Insulin Antibody Pair | Insulin mAb 10-I30E | Insulin mAb 10-I30F |
| Insulin + Proinsulin Antibody Pair | Insulin+Proinsulin mAb 10-I34A | Insulin+Proinsulin mAb 10-I34B |

| Proinsulin Antibody Pair | Proinsulin mAb 10-I30G | Insulin mAb 10-I30B |
EPO antibody (HRP): Erythropoietin is a glycoprotein hormone that controls erythropoiesis, or red blood cell production. This monoclonal EPO antibody is conjugated to HRP (horseradish peroxidase tag) for use in ELISA and Western Blotting.
Luteinizing Hormone antibody: Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland. In females, an increase in LH results in ovulation and development of the corpus luteum. This monoclonal Luteinizing hormone antibody is purified by Protein A chromatography and is >90% pure. It can be used in sandwich immunoassays with its matched antibody pair Luteinizing Hormone antibody.
