CD4 antibodies or (Cluster of Differentiation 4 antibodies) are commonly used to study HIV infection. CD4 is a membrane glycoprotein found on T lymphocytes that interacts with major histocompatibility complex class II antigens including several major infectious diseases. CD4 is also a major receptor for the human immunodeficiency virus. CD4 is also expressed in B cells, granulocytes and macrophages. CD4 cells are a vitally important element of the mammalian immune system, they are often referred to as T-helper cells due to their ability to enhance the immune response to an antigens presence by signalling other elements of the immune system. CD4 deficiency greatly reduces the body’s ability to fend off infection.
As the receptor for HIV and subsequent AIDs virus infection, CD4 is a major target in HIV and AIDs research. HIV infection leads to a progressive reduction in the number of T cells expressing CD4, therefore monitoring of CD4 levels is used by medical staff to monitor the progression of the disease and the efficacy of any treatment strategies.
