Estrogen receptor antibody

Estrogen receptor antibodies are used to study the hormone estrogen which is a small, carbon-rich hormones derived from cholesterol. Unlike larger hormones such as insulin which are bound by receptors on the cell surface, estrogens pass directly into cells interior and attach to receptors in the cells cytosol and/or nucleus. When estrogen enters the nucleus, it binds to the estrogen receptor forming a dimer. There are two different forms of the estrogen receptor, usually referred to as alpha and beta. Estrogen receptor alpha and beta show significant overall sequence similarities, although different ligands may differ in their affinity for alpha and beta isoforms of the estrogen receptor.

Once activated by estrogen, the Estrogen Receptor is a DNA-binding transcription factor, it is able to translocate into the nucleus and bind to DNA to regulate the activity of a wide variety of different genes governing development, reproduction, aging, metabolism and more. Dysfunction in Estrogen and the Estrogen Receptor has been closely linked to obesity, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, and endometrial cancer.
