General Information
Biological Significance
Candida albicans is a dimorphic fungus that causes many undesirable symptoms ranging from fatigue and weight gain, to joint pain and gas. It is one of the few species of the Candida genus that cause the infection candidiasis in humans. C. albicans is a common member of human gut flora and is detectable in the gastrointestinal tract in 40% of healthy adults.
Implications in Disease
The most commonly known yeast infection caused by Candida albicans is thrush. Infections of the skin and the mucous due to Candida spp. may occur either in immucompromised or in non-immunocompromised individuals. C. albicans infections also constitute the most fungal infections in AIDS patients.
