General Information
Biological Significance
Activated C1s (a serine protease) cleaves two serum proteins C4 and C2. C4 is cleaved into a large fragment C4b, and a smaller, inactive fragment C4a. C4b binds covalently to sugar residues on cell-surface glycoproteins, while C4a diffuses away following cleavage. C2 is cleaved into C2b and C2a. C2b binds noncovalently to a site on C4b, while C2a diffuses away.
