General Information

Biological Significance The cytochrome P450 superfamily (officially abbreviated as CYP) is a large and diverse group of enzymes. The function of most CYP enzymes is to catalyze the oxidation of organic substances. The substrates of CYP enzymes include metabolic intermediates such as lipids and steroidal hormones, as well as xenobiotic substances such as drugs and other toxic chemicals. Rat CYP2D1, the homologue of human CYP2D6, has been shown to catalyse the conversion of hydrocodone to hydromorphone, and in rat liver microsomes it participates in the conversion of ethylmorphine to codeine and morphine. Its regional distribution in the rat brain has been described. Mutation in the cyp2D6 gene has been reported to be associated with PD10.
