General Information
| Biological Significance | Cystatin C is encoded by the CST3 gene and is highly implicated in measurement of kidney function as an alternative to creatinine and creatinine clearance tests. It has a molecular weight of approximately 13.3 kDa, and is removed from the bloodstream by the kidneys through glomerular filtration. High levels of Cystatin C in blood corresponds to decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) which is essentially an indication ofkidney dysfunction. |
