| Biological Significance | Cystatin C is used as a biomarker of kidney function. Ithas a low molecular weightof about13.3 kDaand is removed from the bloodstream by glomerular filtration in the kidneys. Diagnostic kidney dysfunction testingis based on a rise of Cystatin Cin the blood when kidney function and glomerular filtration rate decline.It functions asa potent inhibitor of lysosomal proteinases andis ahugely important extracellular inhibitor of cysteine proteases. Recently, Cystatin Chas been studied for its role in predicting new-onset or deteriorating cardiovascular disease. It has also been reported to have a role in amyloid related brain disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease. |
