General Information
| Biological Significance | D-dimer is a protein fragment which forms when a blood clot exists. When the blood clot begins to break down, the process releases D-dimer into the blood. Blood clots which travel to different parts of the body can cause serious conditions, such as stroke if they form in the brain, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the leg, or apulmonary embolism (PE) in the lungs. Diagnostic testing for D-dimer is routinely performed on blood for suspected blood clots. The normal range for D-dimer is less than 0.5 micrograms per milliliter. |
