General Information
| Biological Significance | Ferritin is a globular protein present in all cell typesof 450 kDa consisting of 24 subunits. In vertebrates, these subunits are both light (L) with a molecular weight of 19 kDa andheavy (H) type with a molecular weight of21 kDa.Ferritin functions as the primary intracellular iron-storage protein and maintainsiron in a soluble and non-toxic form. Serum ferritin levels are measured indiagnostic testingforexamining iron levels inanemia and for restless legs syndrome. Normal ferritin levelsare usually between 30–300 ng/ml inmales, and 6–115 ng/ml infemales. |
