General Information
Biological Significance
p24 is the core protein in the HIV virus particle. It forms the "capsid" of the virus, the case in which HIV's RNA genome is kept. The level of p24 found in the blood serum is an indicator of HIV progression (and similarly, a dropping level of antibodies to p24). Testing for "heat-denatured p24 antigen" was found in a 2002 study to be statistically equivalent to CD4 count and viral load tests.
