General Information
| Biological Significance | Prealbuminis synthesized in the liver, choroid plexus and retinal pigment epithelium. It is a 55kDa homotetramer with a dimer of dimers quaternary structure and is secreted into the bloodstream, cerebrospinal fluid and the eye according to where it is synthesised. Prealbumin, also known as transthyretin, is used as a marker of nutritional status. Ithas a half-life in plasma of ~2 days, much shorter than that of albumin and sois more sensitive to changes in protein-energy status than albumin. Prealbumin measurementsof<100 mg/Lare regarded as indicating severe risk of protein-energy malnutrition, 100?170 mg/L moderate risk, and >170 mg/L no risk. Itsconcentration closely reflects recent dietary intake rather than overall nutritional status. |
