General Information
| Biological Significance | There are three serogroups of parvoviruses that affect rats: RPV (formerly rat orphan parvovirus), RV, and H-1 (Toolan’s). Kilham rat virus is one strain representing the RV serogroup. The Parvoviridae are single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) viruses. Having no cell structure of its own it infects the body’s cells to replicate. Parvoviruses preferentially replicate when cells are in a mitotic stage of cell division such as is seen during fetal development. |
