| Assay Information | The CBI fT4 is a solid phase competitive ELISA. The samples, assay buffer and T4 enzyme conjugate are added to the wells coated with anti-T4 monoclonal antibody. fT4 in the patient’s serum competes with a T4 enzyme (HRP) conjugate for binding sites. Unbound fT4 and T4 enzyme conjugate is washed off by washing buffer. Upon the addition of the substrate, the intensity of color is inversely proportional to the concentration of fT4 in the samples. A standard curve is prepared relating color intensity to the concentration of fT4. |

General Information
| Biological Significance | The thyroid hormone, thyroxine (T4) is produced by the thyroid gland. An important component in the synthesis is iodine. The major form of thyroid hormone in the blood is thyroxine (T4). Thyroxine is converted to the active T3 (three to four times more potent than T4) within cells by deiodinases (5'- iodinase). Thyroxine-binding globulin (TGB) is the major carrier protein for circulating thyroid hormone. Only a very small fraction of the circulating hormone is free (unbound) - T4 0.03%. |
