General Information
| Biological Significance | TRIM21 is an intracellular antibody effector in the intracellular antibody-mediated proteolysis pathway. It binds to immunoglobulin G as well as immunoglobulin M on antibody marked non-enveloped virions which have infected the cell. |
|---|---|
| Expression | As a component of the proteolysis pathway, TRIM21 is expressed in most human tissues. Tissue and Cell Localization: TRIM21 is mainly found in the cytoplasm and the nucleus. Isoform 1 and isoform 2 are expressed in fetal and adult heart and fetal lung. |
| Implications in Disease | TRIM21 interacts with autoantigens in patients with Sjögren's syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus. |
| Post-Translational Modifications | TRIM21 is autoubiquitinated which does not lead to its proteasomal degradation. Deubiquitinated by USP4; leading to its stabilization. Ubiquitination occurs at Lys260. |
