General Information
| Biological Significance | Vitamin D is a vitamin synthesized within mammals when exposed to sunlight, or gained from dairy products.It belongs to a group of fat-soluble secosteroids which are responsible for enhancing intestinal absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate and zinc. Vitamin D deficiency iscaused bynumber of conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes. Although, vitamin D supplements claim to prevent osteoporosis, aid in cancer prevention, cardiac disease, there is no clear scientific evidence to support this. An IOM committee concluded a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level of 20 ng/ml (50 nmol/l) is desirable for bone and overall health. |
