General Information
| Biological Significance | Zika virus (ZIKV), a Flaviviridae family member is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes, the same type of mosquito that carries dengue fever, yellow fever, and chikungunya virus. It was first isolated in Ughanda, Africa in 1947.Since the 1950s, it has been known to occur within a narrow equatorial belt from Africa to Asia. From 2007 to 2016, the virus spread eastward, across the Pacific Ocean to the Americas, where the 2015–16 Zika virus epidemic reached pandemic levels. |
|---|---|
| Implications in Disease | Zika causes a non life threatening virus, unless transmitted from a pregnant mother to her fetus where severe birth defects result. Symptoms of Zika are a fever, rash, conjunctivitis and headaches. There is no cure or treatment. |
| Post-Translational Modifications | Post translationally, NS1 is glycosylated and associates with lipids forming a homodimer inside the cells. It is necessary for viral replication and late in infection. |
